The Historic Day Has Come

I am happy to report...no I am honored to report that I have cast my ballot in our election. It is such an amazing feeling to be able to have some control over the destiny of my nation, a feeling I have not known before! I was one of the first ones to report to our local voting station, and I placed my vote, my stained finger is proof (The authorities are using such a system to make sure people do not vote twice). I was not the only one to show up at the opening of the voting area, there were at least a dozen other Iraqis waiting to take part in this momentus event, and as I left, I saw tens more file in.

It is early in the day, but I am confident of the turnout of the vote. The terrorists have not scared us. They made some attempts at disrupting things yesterday when they attacked an American buildling, and in attacking balloting areas, but it has not been effective. People are going to vote. From the conversations I have had with people across Baghdad, it looks like the Iraqiya list is going to come out on top. But this is speculation and is not as important as the fact that we are voting as a nation now. No more of the shams that Saddam put us through, no more of not having control over the political future, it ends today.

It will be a day forever remembered. My voting was only a simple act, I went, I identified myself, got my finger stained, filled out a ballot, and dropped it in a box. It is not a complex or grand process to the eye, but it is one that I will forever remember and will recount to my children, and their children. And God willing it will be remembered through the ages.

So, there is not much more for me to say on this day. I am just elated and excited. So much hard work and sacrifice has gone into making this day come, and I am so speechless now that it is here. I plan on having a big breakfast and heading otu to encourage more people to vote. Let us all hope that all the recluses will come out, the Sunnis realize the importance of the election, and that all Iraqis vote in a party that builds a strong, free and secular Iraq!

PS - I am sorry for being slow with e-mails over the last few days, it has been a very hectic time for me.

Congratulations, Husayn.

I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight because I'll be waking up every hour to check the news and pray everything goes well. There was just a report of a suicide car bomb in western Baghdad near a polling station. It apparently killed one Iraqi policeman. Our media is acting like it's a huge disaster that portends failure for the election. The car exploded at a checkpoint and that tells me that the security system worked. It's tragic for that one policeman but he did his job and prevented the bomber from getting near the voters and the polling station. That's good news, if you ask me.

I hope the rest of the day goes well and I hope Iraqis don't allow the media's sensationalization of isolated incidents to scare them away.

Husayn, in the US Navy when a man is in the first crew, onboard a ship, he is called a plank-owner. Regardless of how many people serve on that ship there can only be one crew that are plank owners. You are the owner of a plank that is being used to build Iraq. I salute you.

Congrats on your vote! There is no way I can ever know the depth of your feelings at this moment, but I know they are all good and probably overwhealming.

I have discovered tonight that the blue-stained finger is starting to become the symbol of freedom here in the US. I have found a couple of blog sites that are collecting pictures of your countrymen at the polls proudly holding up their stained finger. Several here in the US are planning to stain their fingers before going to work Monday in a show of support for your country's victory over tyrany. I hope it catches on around the world! GOOD SHOW!!

Democracy is messy. Democracy is sometimes ugly. But the rewards are without bounds. Americans have died for centuries to preserve democracy. Don't forget out people had to suffer to get freedom and democracy just as your people are suffering. Many refused to participate and many died trying to demonstrate democracy. I applaud your courage. I applaud the courage of your people who risked their lives to vote. This is what Iraq needs: People taking responsibility (and risk) to seek freedom and democracy. Congratulations!

Husayn: CONGRATULATIONS to you and all of Iraq. It's 8:00 am here in Florida where the news says that all of Iraq is showing a 72% voter turnout -- FANTASTIC.

FoxNews just interviewed an Iraqi election official in Detroit and he said he expected the percentage to be even higher by election close. The courage of Iraqi citizens is awesome.

When the reporter asked this election official if the terrorists would keep Iraqis away from the polls, he said "NO, IF THEY KILL ONE VOTER, ANOTHER FIVE WILL TAKE HIS PLACE......IF THEY KILL 5 POLICEMENT, ANOTHER 10 WILL STEP FORWARD TO BECOME POLICEMEN." This kind of dedication and sacrifice puts all free people to shame.

May God continue to watch over Iraqis who want nothing more than freedom.

I am so proud and happy for you and all your fellow Iraqis. I'm just an American citizen, watching events on a television screen. I so desperately want your nation to be strong, peaceful, happy; yet I have felt powerless to do anything from where I am. Today the fate of your nation was in your own hands, and I could only watch. But seeing your countrymen's bravery and faith in Iraq's future has given me hope. God bless and guard Iraq and her people.

As time goes forward, IRAQ will delight in the pleasures of freedom and test your patience as you and your fellow citizens refine your laws and doctrines. Such is the yin and yang of the wonderful world of democracy.

Who knows? We may one day find your name among the leaders of IRAQ.

Throughout your voting day, my eyes continued to well with tears of many emotions – mostly the awe inspiring bravery and courage of everyone who risked all to vote. By your example, you are truly the modern pioneers of exciting possibilities and hope for others in the world who wish for change.

A post script from the USA

Imagine how ticked off the suicide bombers are going to be if German scholar Christoph Luxenberg is correct that the Qur’an has been mistranscribed from the original text.

Instead of being rewarded with 72 virgins, “houris” with “swelling breasts” refers to nothing more than “white raisins” and “juicy fruits.”

Congratulations from the USA for the courage of the Iraqi people to step up against tyranny.

Although, we in America would love to have our troops home as soon as possible (and some politicians keep comparing Iraq to Viet Nam!), we know that there will still be tough times ahead.

We will support you, be there with you, and ensure that Iraq is a successful member of international commerce and community.

I would only ask that the new Iraqi government memorialize our soldiers who died helping this new direction for your country, memorialize Iraqi police and national guard who have died in their quest in the fight for true freedom, and memorialize innocent Iraqi people - who, unfortunately and regrettably, became casualties while this war took place (it is unfortunate that innocent citizens were killed in "crossfire" by US Troops and the Terrorists, but a fact of war - Americans universally apologize for those killed by US Troops and hope that Iraqi's understand that this is an unfortunate price of freedom).

Good luck Iraq!

7:23 PM
Blogger dusty said...

You are hoping the Iraq people will memorialize the american soldiers? LMAO..No way in hell they will memorialize the people that occupied their country. Invaders is what most of them think of when they think of the United States. Its a double edged sword for the U.S.,surely most people are aware of that fact. We are similar to a kidnapper that eventually gets the victim to side with them, to sympathize with them. That is the best we can hope for in Iraq. I hope this baby step taken today in Iraq goes forward and puts them on the road to democracy and self-rule. There are going to be many baby steps needed for Iraq to reach a peaceful state. The road will be full of hate, terror and assassinations. Lets hope and pray that Iraq makes it.

I can't help feeling amazed by the opportunity to have a say in how you are governed. How much of the "democratic" world is apathetic to the political process?

It's amazing to see people who are excited and proud to be able to vote. What a feeling! No one, regardless of political agenda, should be allowed to take that away.

I am humbled by the courage of the People of Iraq and their desire for freedom and self rule. Freedom loving people everywhere rejoice in this day for the People of Iraq. We yearn to see self rule and Democracy spread throughout the Middle East. Iraq is in the craddle of civilization and has shown that its Brave and Courageous people desire freedom welcome to the Free World. We welcome Iraq with open arms, we rejoice in the triumph of the will of free people. Long Live the Brave and Free People of Iraq. Your people are an inspiration to the apathetic and lazy Americans who can vote and don't bother to show up.

The Tree of Liberty must be periodically refreshed with the blood of Brave Men who yearn to be free. Iraqis have shown they are willing to pay that price.
My admiration to you and your countrymen. I sincerely hope for peace and prosperity for your country. Your country has much to do with a new Constitution and election of National Leaders. My prayers are for you and your people.

Congratulations my Iraqi friend!

But now, I must call on Iraqi's to assist America.

You see, there are some people in this country that feel you should still be ruled by Saddam Hussein, that they want the terrorists to succeed in your country, that they want YOU blown up by bombs to show that Iraq remains in fear and unstable, that they want your new government to fail.

These people are actively involved in our government - not in our executive branch, some in our legislative branch, and many, many in our judicial branch (the most dangerous branch of all). When you see the United State enter a struggle between freedom or power grabbing and mongering...please send the Iraqi National Guard to help us out of potential tyranny.

With your help, we both can assure freedom will reign throughout the world!

Again...Congratulations to the people of Iraq from America.

Congratulations! I have been praying for Iraqi's and our people there for days-praying that this wouldn't just turn out to be a bloodbath. I stayed up last night till 1:00 a.m. wanting to know whether during the first two hours the terrorists were winning, and I have just spent about three hours blogging to get as much first-hand information as possible.

I have sat here with tears of pride and joy for what you have accomplished as a people today-to face down the terrorists and take that first step along freedom's road. It takes bravery to fight for freedom and to face down the tyrants and terrorists, and obviously the Iraqi people have plenty of that.

Again, congratulations and may Iraq long prosper in freedom!

Hey Dusty,

You can LMAO all the way while reading this article:

http://www.nypost.com/news/worldnews/39526.htm

Yes, we are occupiers. We were occupiers in Germany. We were occupiers in Japan. Our soldiers will get out when it is mutually time for both Iraq and the US to get out.

Much like Normandy...over time you will see memorials to US Troops. Many Iraqi's may not like them...but they know that their wives would be "known biblically" by Oday and Hussay without us, that they would be forced to jump off buildings while being filmed without us there, that they would be shot and thrown in pits without us there, that they could be gassed without us there, and that they could be publicly beheaded each day if it wasn't for our troops.

Now my friend...I am LMAO! VIVA IRAQ!

Welcome my new friend to the world of free nations.
You and your country should be proud for you have displayed tremendous courage to put yourself in harm's way to do something we take for granted in this country.VOTING!!!!!!
In many ways you have taken the first step towards a long and difficult journey.Building a democracy is not easy, but is well worth whatever effort it takes.
As I close, please do one thing for me.Please ignore totally all in my country who speak of bringing our troops home and who generally criticize the war effort.
In many ways they have been spoiled by those before them who have sacrificed so much so that they may stand and criticize their country. These people, many of whom are government representatives, are self-serving and fear a loss of power in their party. In many ways they are like the terrorist who resort to hatred and violence to impose their views and influence on others.
Congratulations to you and your countryman for initiatin your quest for freedom!!!!!!
